Play to Learn

Football and play-based learning for the classroom and beyond.

We don’t hand out worksheets — we hand out bibs. At Watoto Wasoka, play is how we teach, football is how we connect, and learning is what happens along the way.

Why it matters

In Uganda today, 7 out of 10 children in Primary 3 cannot read a simple sentence. Many struggle in silence, especially in underserved communities where classrooms are overcrowded and resources are limited.

At Watoto Wasoka, we believe learning should feel like play, not punishment. That’s why our programs use football-themed games to teach English and Math.

Backed by global research and grassroots results, play-based education works. And when football is part of the lesson, every child wants to be in the game.

What we do

Play to Learn is built on three interconnected components:

In-school programming

For children aged 7–14 in public and low-cost schools

Play-based literacy and numeracy sessions
Structured, curriculum-aligned learning activities using football and movement to improve English and math outcomes.

Teacher training
We equip teachers with creative, low-cost tools to deliver engaging, child-centered instruction through play.

Progress tracking
We use baseline and endline assessments to measure student gains and adapt our sessions to meet learning needs.

Teacher Development & School Partnerships

Teacher Trainings
We train teachers to use play and football as tools for teaching literacy and numeracy.

School partnerships
Partner schools integrate Play to Learn sessions into their weekly timetable for sustainability.

Peer Learning
Teachers form peer learning circles to share games, lesson ideas, and classroom impact.

WYLA – Wasoka Young Leaders Awards

Scholarships + mentorship for promising youth

A leadership program recognizing youth who excel in football and community service.

Offers partial scholarships, mentorship, and growth opportunities for primary and secondary school students to complete school.

How we know it’s working

We track progress through questionnaires, surveys and peer observation, and we use this data to refine our sessions.
