About Us

Watoto Wasoka started in Kampala’s slums with a football, a few children, and a big question:

Our Vision

A Uganda where every child can play, learn, and thrive with joy.

Our Mission

"To transform lives through football, using the power of play to improve health, education, and opportunity for Uganda’s underserved children."

Can play help children learn, grow, and feel safe — even in the toughest places?

In the slums where we began, football was more than a game. It was how children made friends, solved problems, and escaped worry for a while. We saw its power, and built on it. Today, we use football to help children in Uganda’s urban slums get the things every child deserves: a good education, good health, a chance, and a space to feel seen and supported.

Watoto Wasoka means “football children” in Swahili. It’s who we were, and who we work for every day. Since 2009, we’ve reached more than 50,000 children across Uganda. We continue to listen, learn, and grow with every community we serve.

What we do

We work in schools and communities to make play a part of everyday learning and life.

Our team works with coaches, teachers and peer leaders to run football-based sessions that improve reading and math, teach health, build leadership, and support mental well-being.

We don’t hand out worksheets — we hand out bibs. The football pitch is our classroom. It’s simple, low-cost, and built for the places we work.

Our approach is:

  • Football-based – because that’s what children already love.
  • Play-driven – because movement makes learning stick.
  • Peer-led – because children learn best from each other.

Why it matters

We’ve seen the difference a game can make:

  • A boy reads better because he learned letters while playing.
  • A girl speaks up because her coach handed her the whistle.
  • A whole class starts washing hands from a play-based peer-led session.

That’s not just impact — that’s everyday change.

How we play the game

Our work is driven by more than just goals and games, it’s powered by purpose. These values guide every session we run, every child we coach, and every partnership we build:

People first

We put people at the centre of everything — investing in every child, coach, and team member to learn, lead, and thrive with confidence, support, and care.

Integrity

We lead with honesty, accountability, and transparency, in every promise, partnership, or program. On the field or in a funding proposal, we build trust that lasts.

Respect

We champion fairness, inclusion, and dignity — on the pitch, in classrooms, and in communities. Every child, regardless of gender, background, or ability, deserves to be seen, heard, and given a safe space to thrive.

Fun

We take play seriously. Joy isn’t extra, it’s essential. From solving math problems on the field to playing barefoot in the rain, fun is how we connect, learn, and create lasting impact.
