Over 2,100 children. 127 teams. 235 matches in two days (14th and 15th May, 2026).
But the Slums Derby 2026 was about far more than football.
Held at Buziga Islamic Theological Institute, this year’s edition brought together children from communities across Kampala for two unforgettable days of play, teamwork, friendship, and community.
From the first whistle to the final celebrations, the grounds were filled with energy, colour, excitement, and joy as boys’ and girls’ Under-13 teams competed, connected, and created memories together. For many children, the derby was not simply a tournament. It was a rare opportunity to play in a safe and organised environment, meet peers from different communities, build confidence, and express themselves through football.

A platform for participation and inclusion
The Slums Derby continues to grow as one of Watoto Wasoka’s largest grassroots football platforms. This year’s tournament featured 96 boys’ teams and 31 girls’ teams:
- 2,100 participating children
- 235 matches played across two days
The inclusion of girls’ football remained an important part of the event, with the Girls U13 category continuing to create more opportunities for girls to participate, compete, and be visible in community sport.
Across the tournament, children demonstrated teamwork, discipline, resilience, sportsmanship, and creativity both on and off the pitch.
Beyond the Goals and Trophies
While the matches were competitive and exciting, some of the most meaningful moments happened away from the scoreboard.
Children celebrated goals together, encouraged teammates, shared meals, made new friendships, and experienced the simple joy of play.
Community coaches, volunteers, supporters, and organisers worked tirelessly throughout the two days to ensure a safe and positive experience for every child involved.
The derby once again highlighted the important role football can play in:
- creating safe spaces for children;
- strengthening community connection;
- building confidence and teamwork;
- supporting talent development;
- and promoting positive childhood experiences.
At Watoto Wasoka, we believe football can be more than a game. It can become a platform through which children learn, connect, belong, and grow healthy together.
